Peter I was wondering what your opinions are on neutering cats. I've read that they lose their "spunk/spark for life", that they become dull & lazy, etc and their personality becomes as exciting as that of a castrated eunich. Is this true. I prefer him as he is, and would hate to take away his zest for life. Have any of you struggled with this. Any advice will be appreciated.
Pauline In some cats, as in humans, once the necessary equipment has been taken away shall we say, they take life in stride, easier going. Also, they may gain weight as the metabolism is a little slower. I have had animals both neutered and whole, horses, cats, and dogs, and notice no major difference other than being a bit more playful cause the "mind" is not so much on the wild thang. One will never ever really know, it is based on their personality before and after I think moreso. I have one Persian who still exhibits horniness, and had a horse, a gelding, after owning a mare, and he jumped other horses like a stud. You just never know the outcome, just they can't have babies is all. Most of the major change is pure rumor/speculation. Good luck whatever you decide.
jamieleigh I have four cats, two male and two female, and found that the two male cats did calm down just a little after being neutered. It could have been due to the fact that they were becoming adult cats, they were both over 6 months old. The two female cats were seemed the same after surgery. So, I think it depends on the cat and how old they are.
bellasmommy i think this definitely depends on the cat.. especially after reading other responses.. i have five cats; three female and two male.. all the females are spayed and all lost some of their spunk and gained weight.. however the one male that is neutered has not changed a bit since the surgery..
i do know for a fact that the neutering is an easier and less invasive procedure than spaying.. so males should be less affected by the surgery than females..
